I have a friend who’s a pretty private guy. He’s the type of guy to not use social media and isn’t really the biggest fan of using cell phones. I think we all have an old-fashioned friend like that. Now imagine if that very friend called to tell you that he was going to start his own website and become a blogger. You would be a little (or in my case very) confused. When my friend told me about his website idea, I genuinely thought he was having some sort of quarter life crisis. When I realized he was serious, I decided to give the book that changed his world view a read.
Show Your Work is a fun, simple, and easy to read book that leaves readers with valuable advice on why they should share their work. The author’s main point is actually quite simple. Imagine everyone doing what they love and documenting and sharing that passion in some sort of way. You would undoubtedly create an ecosystem of talent and knowledge sharing. Let’s say you’re super passionate about plants and you decide to share your work and knowledge on plants by documenting and posting updates on a website or some sort of social media. You would end up gaining two main things by sharing your work. For starters, you now have documentation of your work, so you actually see the progress that you are making. Secondly, someone has the possibility of stumbling upon your work and can take interest in what you do and they may also be doing something cool for you to take interest in as well.
At the end of the day, Show Your Work serves as a handbook of ways and tips on how you can tell great stories, make better and more interesting connections, and of course share your work. I would recommend this book to literally anyone who has a passion that they are currently pursuing. Whether it be artificial intelligence or even sewing, this book has the potential to change the way you think about your network and your work. The best part is that this book only takes about an hour and a half to read!
